This single storey gate lodge, measuring 400 sq ft, was not protected but was within the curtilage of a structure which was expected to be protected in the future. The proposal of a client to construct an extension to this lodge measuring approx 1800 sq ft, was one requiring great care and which had to be sympathetic to the very old structure.
Early discussions with the Heritage department and preparing a design which was based on the accepted norms for extending protected structures, ensured that this project was passed quickly.
The old structure was incorporated into the house but the bulk of the new 2 storey structure was separated behind the lodge, by a small single storey glazed link corridor. This separated the new from the old in an attractive way, and allowed the old gate lodge to retain it’s proud position as “sole guardian of the gates”
